It is a place of breathtaking fortified castles preserved since the Middle Ages.
A place of villages seemingly untouched by time.
A place of small European streets paved centuries ago. And if you are one of the lucky ones to travel to Transylvania, Romania during your lifetime, you may just be lucky enough to come across another hidden gem, a “74th Street Bags” studio, recently featured in Vogue UK edition, a shop that makes handmade bags, clutches and anything else you can imagine out of genuine leather.
And if you get to meet Mircea and Daciana, the shop owners, you will find that their store completely reflects their personalities.
Q. What is the inspiration behind your work?
"The colours we use, the textures, the shapes, stitchings are all related to our vision about nature, life, love, food, anything can be an inspiration for us. Even a movie, or a cake, o person," Daciana says.
"We create handmade art and all our products are handmade, created and crafted by us.
What you see is a reflection of more than ten years experience in handmade craft and design often working late hours. Sometimes it feels that even a 48 hour day would not enough. It takes a lots of time and patience to reach perfection."
74streetbags is a home studio. Everything you will find here is hand crafted, hand cut, hand stitched with a manual 1895 Singer machine, actioned by hand, no pedal or electrical parts in it. We work with vintage hand tools tike leather knife, hand eyeleting, hand finishing. We create, design and cut all of the patterns for our bags and accessories.
We use only natural materials like leather, vintage aspect leather and cotton. We do not use plastic, (even zippers are made out of metal). Everything you find here is unique by design.
We create all kinds of bags and leather accessories: classic bags, shoulder bags, cross-overs, messenger bags, laptop bags, IPad Bags, backpacks, belt bags, shopping bags, grocery bags, purses, clutches, phone cases, wallets, belts and yes, even custom sword cases.
Q. Any styling advice to BTF readers when it comes to choosing leather accessories?
Always choose items that fits your personality. And please accord huge attention to accessories: when you choose to wear a complicated bag, with prints and more than two colours try to use clothes as minimalistic as possible and use mono colours as much as possible.
